Machinarium

Released 16 October 2009, Amanita Design

I love tiny flash games. I particularly love indie ones, created more for art than actual play. And I have explored this genre to its very limit- Plachy Trpaslik, Daymare Town 1-3, Submachine, and a lot more. But nothing has compared to the works of Czech game developer Amanita Design (found at amanitadesign.com). My particular favorite, Samorost 2, is brilliant and gorgeous. So imagine my joy when they released their very first full-length game, Machinarium. This was last year, and though I played the demo, I never bought it. Until now, when Steam advertised it for half off. Sold. And I absolutely love it. I mean, I even discussed it on my personal blog (which I'll shamelessly advertise at the end). It's not a game I recommend for those of you who absolutely love action games or FPS. It's a thinking game, the kind that'll make you reclusive for weeks on end until you beat it. You're playing as a tiny robot, running about a large mechanical city full of evil, black hatted robots with superior size yet inferior brainpower. You must navigate around and ultimately save the city and your friend. It's absolutely beautiful, with amazing 2D drawings and a wonderful, minimalistic soundtrack that is almost as important to the game as the art itself (I honestly don't feel like I'm playing unless the sound is on). There are also no words, relying entirely on thought-bubble sketch pictures to communicate meaning (very effectively, too). Even better, it's not just an artsy toy- the best thing about Amanita's games is the fact that they don't require huge, arbitrary leaps of logic to solve, yet are still extremely difficult. Very pretty, but functional, with a lot of gameplay: when they said full-length game, they *meant* it. I can only describe it as a very long, surreal dream that you can control. All in all, Amanita has delivered the best possible gift unto the gaming world. Go play the demo. You'll like it. You *must*. Roar.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

-The One With The Nose

Rating: 9.2

Reviewing Call of Duty games is hard, just because of the size of each game. All of the COD games have many modes, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. With Modern Warfare 2, this is defiantly true. Let's start with multiplayer.

In the multiplayer mode, you can play one of three ways: split screen, online, or LAN party. In the online mode, there are many modes you can play in, such as team deathmatch, free-for-all, and search and destroy. Each has its own unique characteristics. Speaking to the multiplayer in general, the control over classes that you have is good, and the maps are decently designed, but the unlock system needs work, as does the size of maps. The maps on MW2 are too small, and the unlock system is too easy. All you need to do is get a few kills and you have a new gun. The guns come to easily, and are too powerful. Over all, the multiplayer is good, but needs work.

The next mode we will talk about is the campaign mode. In the campaign, you play as many different characters, and never for long on one. The campaign revolves around a war started by the mission No Russian, in which you go under cover to kill Vladimir Makarov, a contract killer with a hatred for the US. In the mission, you go into an airport with Makarov and his men to kill all of the civilians in the airport. In the end of the level, you are about to get into a truck to escape with Makarov when he shoots you and leaves your body to be found by the Russian authorities, thus causing a war with the US. I enjoyed the campaign mode, but I was disappointed  with the end, as you are fighting to kill Makarov, but it is never done. The campaign is good, but again, lacks polish.

The last mode I will tell about is the Spec Ops mode. In Spec Ops, you have many different missions to choose from, in the categories Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, ranging from shooting at wooden targets to fighting 15 juggernauts on an oil rig. The levels can also be customized in difficulty by turning up or down the difficulty. The difficulties that can be chosen from are Regular, Hardened, and Veteran. Spec Ops is my favorite mode on MW2, and it is amazing. It has the polish that other modes lack.

So, I gave this game a 9.2 because the game over all is good, good graphics, good weapons, ect., but it lacks polish. The game is one of the best selling FPS games of all time for obvious reasons, and it is worth the $60.00 I payed for it new even now that I have Black Ops. So, if you want to buy a COD game, consider Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

Warcraft III Reign of Chaos

-The One With The Nose

Rating: 9.63

Ok, this is kind of an old game, but it is still fun. It is a realtime strategy game, and the objective is to, in the battle mode, conquer all other people. There are four races you can play as: human, orc, night elf, and the undead. As each, you have different powers, different units, and different requirements. For example, the undead cannot build buildings on ground that is not close enough to another building. To build cities, you must build each individual building, such as a Town Hall, a Farm, and a Lumber mill. This game is really fun, and only costs $24.95 at gamestop.com. This game is defiantly worth the $25. I would know, I've had it for years.

Civilization Revolution

-The One With The Nose

Rating: 8.95

So, this was my first Civilization game, and it is pretty fun. I enjoy this game quite a bit. Since it is a Civilization game, you can play it for hours at a time. Unfortunately, the team that made Civilization Revolution starved the game of all essential parts of the game, including the religion system of past Civ games and the long games. The games of Civ Rev are extremely short compared to the past and future Civ games. The longest games in Civ Rev are about an hour, so they are just for fast games. Hardcore Civ players won't like the fast game play and belittled controls. It is a very fixed way of playing the game, yet it is still fun. I enjoy this greatly, but I enjoy Civ V more, just because of the advanced controls. In conclusion, it is fun, but is fast.

Sid Meier's Civilization V

Speaking as a devout follower of the Sid Meier cult, I have to say I wasn't disappointed.

The last Civ game I played was III, having skipped out on IV for lack of processing (computer FAIL). Having jumped almost a decade ahead in the series, I was obviously surprised, and at first disappointed. Yes, the graphics are amazing, the hexagonal grid (as opposed to squares for movement) *amazing*. But it didn't have it's ... inherent Civilization feel. Maybe I'm just being old school, but at first I was freaked out over the addition of city states (cities that are not trying to win the game, and can be made allies, enemies, etc.), as well as the fact that you can't stack units onto the same grid square (excuse me, hexagon). I mean, I'd honed a beautiful military strategy to near perfection that depended on that one fact. However, despite this (and a couple other things, I'm a little finicky) I got used to it, even with the annoying new counterintuitive controls ("Right click for unit movement?! This is madness!")  It's so perfectly similar yet a bit alien that it gives you an entirely new game while seeming so familiar. Perfetto.

Advantage for new players: they dumbed it down. A lot. Go into Civ III as a noob and you're dead, even on chieftain [the easiest level. For suckers, in my opinion]. So many things to manage. City happiness, shield production, civil disorder, anarchy, even balancing your budget, for god's sakes. It was all very technical, represented on a series of screens by arcane symbols and sliders that are comprehensible only to true addicts (ahem. me.). Now, they manage everything for you except the actual gameplay. Gone was my perpetual fear about the budget. Just pillage something, bro. Speaking of pillaging: gone was the two option menu when you captured a city (Install a governor! or Raze the City!). Now you have the option of creating a puppet government, where they're under your command yet you are unable to dictate production. You can still annex the city, but it'll reduce happiness and production dramatically.

And, oh how I've waited for it, they have Multiplayer! Yes! Multiplayer. Powered by Steam (the company, not the water vapor, idjit), you can now have teams or every-man-for-himself games of Civilization. Even with it set on fast-paced, however, this is a long game, and without a saving option (I mean, there's other people playing with you. Don't be selfish.) you'd better not be going anywhere for a while.

So, summary: Good game. Weird controls. Simplified. Good for beginners. Multiplayer: yes.
Go buy one. A bit steep, but you'll be entertained for the rest of civilization. (see what I did there?)\]

-The One With The Nose

Rating: 10

The new Civilization game, as the title and above article say, Civ V, is amazing. This is my first computer civilization game, so it was pretty exciting. Up until now, the only computer strategy games I have played were Warcraft III Reign of Chaos (amazing) and Spore (in the city stage). The movement control for units is the same between Warcraft and Civ, so that wasn't a shock. Also, Spore essentially had city states (small civilizations) so I am used to that. For those of you who have never played Civ before, don't allocate 10 minuets to play or even an hour! A game of civilization will take you many hours to finish, even on the quick mode. I was playing one day online with a friend (SleepToDream), and we were playing for 5 hours, and weren't even halfway done. The game was on quick mode, and we were both conquering stuff, so the game was advancing faster than the speed of a running snail. Still, civ manages to stay fun by having constant things that require your attention, such as war, famine, demand for recourses, and diplomacy. This is an extraordinarily well crafted game, and a flexible one too. In Civ V, you can play in a "Mod" mode, where you can download mods created by other users and play them. The mods can include wars of the past, new empires, new tech, and scenarios. Though I have never played a mod game, I know how fun scenarios were in Civilization Revolution, so I will play a mod level soon. In conclusion, buy Civ V. Send me an email at randomstudiosgamingblog@gmail.com to get my Steam ID.

Black Ops Cheats-Part 1

Some people hate cheats, some people love them. Offline, I am a fan of them. Online, no! Here is a fun cheat for Call of Duty Black Ops. In the main menu, press down repeatedly on the triggers (R2 & L2 on PS3) at the same time. You will break free of the chair, and can walk around the room. The cheat computer is in the back of the room. Go to it and type "3arc unlock". This will unlock all of the zombie maps. Or you can do it well and do the campaign. Your choice.

Call of Duty Black Ops

-The One With The Nose

Rating: 9.9

On February 25, 1968, SOG operative Alex Mason is strapped to a chair in an interrogation room. Unaware of his whereabouts, he is bombarded with questions by his unseen captors about the location of a numbers station. Most of the missions in the game are presented as flashbacks between 1961 and 1968.

In 1961, Mason, Woods, and Bowman attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro during the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as a part of Operation 40. Mason apparently succeeds in the assassination, but their exfiltration goes awry, with Mason staying behind to protect the extraction plane. He is captured by the real Castro and the Cuban military. Having formed an alliance with the Soviet Union, Castro hands Mason over to General Nikita Dragovich. Mason is then held captive at Vorkuta Gulag for two years.

During his imprisonment, Mason befriends Viktor Reznov, a former Red Army soldier. Reznov recounts Mason the identities of those involved in Mason’s torture: Dragovich, Lev Kravchenko (his right-hand man) and Friedrich Steiner, an ex-Nazi scientist who defected to the Soviet Union. All three share a connection to Reznov: in October 1945, Reznov, Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Dimitri Petrenko were a part of a unit sent to locate Steiner, hiding with the last Nazi strugglers in the Arctic Circle. During the operation, Reznov was betrayed by Dragovich, who uses Steiner's creation, a nerve agent known as "Project Nova" on Petrenko. Reznov is spared when British commandos attack. During the confusion, he destroys Project Nova. It is salvaged by the Russians, becoming known as "Nova-6". Shortly afterward, Reznov is imprisoned in Vorkuta. Mason and Reznov spark a prisoner uprising to escape the gulag, but only Mason escapes.

One month later, President John F. Kennedy authorizes the assassination of Dragovich. In November 1963, Mason, Woods, Bowman and Weaver are dispatched to Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR to disrupt the Soviet space program and eliminate members of the Soviet Ascension program. During the operation, Weaver is captured and lose his left eye. But Mason and his team successfully rescue him, while still destroying the Soyuz spacecraft as well. Dragovich eludes assassination, prompting Mason to search for him over the next five years.

By 1968, the MACV-SOG was established in Vietnam to investigate the Soviets' presence. After defending Khe Sanh, the SOG is deployed to Hue during the Tet Offensive to recover a dossier with information on Dragovich from a Russian defector. The team recovers the dossier, while Mason encounters Reznov, who is revealed to be the defector. The SOG then penetrates Laos to recover a Nova-6 shipment from a downed Soviet plane. At the crash site, they are overwhelmed by waves of Viet Cong and Spetznaz soldiers, eventually getting captured. Mason and Reznov escape, but Bowman is executed and Woods died while killing Kravchenko.

Meanwhile, Hudson and Weaver interrogate Clarke, an engineer who stabilized Nova-6 in Kowloon. Clarke identifies Steiner as part of the conspiracy, and reveals the location of a hidden facility in Mount Yamantau before being killed by Dragovich's men. Hudson and Weaver head to Mount Yamantau to destroy the facility and apprehend Steiner. During the mission, Hudson receives a transmission from Steiner requesting to meet him at Rebirth Island in the Aral Sea to learn how to halt a numbers broadcast with instructions to release Nova-6 gas in American cities. Mason and Reznov head to Rebirth Island to assassinate Steiner. Reznov executes Steiner, but Hudson witnesses Mason carrying out the deed.

At this point, Hudson and Weaver are revealed as Mason's interrogators. Hudson realizes that Dragovich brainwashed Mason to understand the numbers broadcasts, effectively becoming a Soviet sleeper agent. Out of options, Hudson deliberately sets Mason free in order to follow him. It is revealed that Reznov died during the Vorkuta break out, and Mason’s visions of Reznov are a result of a personality disorder, a byproduct of Reznov having sabotaged Mason’s brainwashing program. Mason was supposed to assassinate Kennedy, but Reznov reprogrammed him to track down and kill the three men responsible for Dimitri Petrenko's betrayal and death. Hudson plays the numbers recording for Mason a final time, prompting him to remember the location of the Russian cargo ship Rusalka off the coast of Cuba.

By dawn, the team launches an assault on the Rusalka, with Mason and Hudson infiltrating an underwater broadcast station protected by the ship, a Soviet submarine station intended to be used as a staging point for US invasion after the planned Nova-6 attack. Confirming that the Rusalka is the numbers station, Hudson calls in the US Navy to destroy the ship and its underwater base. Mason and Hudson finally kill Dragovich in the lower levels of the station, and swim for the surface during the destruction of the targets. Weaver declares victory, but Mason is unsure.

World of Warcraft

I've got to say, this game is fun.
A couple of my friends are addicted to WoW, and I was having a party they were considering skipping because of a raid. They had been trying to get me to play for a while, so I said that I would play the trial if they came to my party. They came, so I got the trial and played it for an hour. The game is amazingly fun; really weird, but fun. Only problem is that it costs a lot of money, and it is insanely addictive. Also, no one wants to hear about your new flying mount or you level 80 rouge, so you can't really talk about it. Ever...

I didn't get too far into the game, but from what I played, I can tell that you do what you do in every MMORPG game ever made; go around killing stuff and looting the bodies. Still, I would recommend buying this game if you are willing to cough up $15 a month, plus the $20 for the game, then, if you want the expansion packs, which I would recommend, you need to spend another $90. All in, if you play for a year, and get 6 month subscriptions, which cost $13/month, it will cost you $266, which is a lot of money.

Little Big Planet (Regular)

The One with the Nose

Rating: 9.7

Little Big Planet is a play, create, share game. In the game, you are a sack person and go through both the story mode and games posted online by other players. In the story mode, you go through a series of progressively difficult stages. Within the stages, you play individual levels. The levels are the only part of the story mode you actually play. The stages are simply like folders, with different level themes.
Now for the create part of the game. In Little Big Planet, you can create levels. The level creation system is a simple select and drag system. The controls for the creation mode are easy to pick up, and there are helpful tutorials if you get stuck or want to use more advanced things.
Finally, the sharing feature. In Little Big Planet, you can share the levels you create on Media Molecule's servers for all players to see. This sharing option allows there to be a wide range of levels, and an opportunity for your creativity to shine, and be noticed by the world.

Closing thought: Though Little Big Planet is not the perfect game, it allows for many different playing styles and personalities. Also, it is a game that you can just pick up a controller and play for the first time, and still have as much fun as people who had been playing for a year.

Little big planet is a fun creative game. It is what people call the play, create, share. In the game you are a Sack Person. UDK

Today I am writing about Unreal Development Kit, which is one of the better development kits for consoles. I know it's not a game, but it is good enough for me. It's hard to find a free dev kit, but UDK is free. In the kit, you design levels by actually moving objects. Also, the kit includes an animation system, a cut scene creator, and the physics engine is powered by  PhysX. UDK is the dev kit that was used for games such as BiosShock and Batman Arkham Asylum. All in all, the Unreal Development Kit is a good thing to have near all game designers. I have found some tutorials on their site that will be of use; here they are. http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/DevelopmentKitHome.html

Skate 3

Rated T
Released May 11, 2010

Compared to Skate 2 (New San Vanelona), I found that its sequel, Port Carverton, just couldn't measure up. The story and plot were predictable and simple, and much stayed the same. Though it seemed to have fewer genuinely good skating areas compared to 2, the map was very difficult to follow- locating yourself was difficult and you cannot teleport from one place to another, a feature that was included in older versions. Even the realism is better in the old game, with the narrow streets and city-like feel. Despite this, I did enjoy gameplay- hardcore mode presented new challenges, and many features made the game crisper, faster, and less aggravating in many cases. Overall, I'm disappointed, but will continue to play all the same.

Skate 2

I liked skate 2 a Lot I thought it was a great game it was just amazing how you play online and the story mode is just great to me. The add-ons are great I like them. I highly suggest this game. I like the fact that in this game you aren't just using one button and jumping you are using the buttons like you are actualy skateboarding.

Madden 11

I really liked madden it was a big step up of madden 10 which I didn't like. It has a new way to call plays ultimate team which I usually play. The new way of calling play is instead of picking your plays you can just put gameflow and it will give you a play tar the Jean coach would use and gives you a description of what you should look for

Spore

Spore is a game where you create a creature and play it through five unique stages. In the first stage (Cell stage) you create a cell and eat things to grow. This is the shortest stage, as you can play it in under 8 minuets. In the second stage (creature stage) you are a full creature and either attack or befriend other creatures. This is a fairly long and fun stage, as you can do anything you like. In the third stage (Tribal Stage) you are in a tribe with other creatures of your type of creature, and you attack or befriend other tribes to get through the stage. In the fifth stage (Civilization Stage) you have cities and you attack, buy, or ally with other cities to win this stage. The fifth stage (Space Stage) is infident. You have a space empire and you take over or befriend other empires as you try to get to the center of the galaxy. In order to get to the center of the galaxy, you must get past the grox empire, who are a huge warring empire who are almost imposable to ally with. Spore is rated E-10 and is avalable for Windows and Mac OS.

Shawn white snowboarding

I like the set up of this game I usually just play without the story mode because I just like the way you play the game. In the story mode it wasn't what I expected i thought it would be all freestyle and what Shawn white does but a lot of it is just finding coins to go to the next place. The only real time you do a freestyle event is after you beat the game. I was a little disappointed in the story mode I still like the game I just play without the story mode.

Modnation racers review

I like to think of Modnation racers as the car version of Little Big Planet. Like Little Big Planet Modnation racers is a play, create, share or race, create, share as the game uses. Modnation has offline split screen up to 4 players, has 12 player online play, and a 1 player career. In Modnation you can customize your mod(what your wearing) and your car. You can create a track in minutes. First you lay out your track then place props. Save then you can race your friends. In Modnation you can share your mod, car, and tracks. You can also download other tracks to play. In Modnation races there are many add-ons to the game. I like that Modnation and Little Big Planet with having a mod from Modnation on little big planet and having a Sackboy(the person in Little Big Planet) and a Little Big Planet inspired car.

Little Big Planet-Game of the Year Edition

Little Big Planet 2 is basically the same as Little Big Planet but it comes with bonus content.
In Little Big Planet-Game of the Year Edition, you automatically get over $30 of bonus content, including the paint ball gun (the paintinator). Also, you get a bonus level pack including a metal gear solid stage. Little Big Planet-Game of the Year Edition is rated E for everyone.
